Thermal comfort temperature update for broiler chickens up to 21 days of age REA
Cassuce,Déborah C.; Tinôco,Ilda de F. F.; Baêta,Fernando C.; Zolnier,Sérgio; Cecon,Paulo R.; Vieira,Maria de F. A..
Due to changes in genetics and nutrition, as well as in acclimatization of broiler chickens to the Brazilian climate, temperature values currently accepted as optimal may be outdated. The objective of this research was to update the environment temperatures that characterize the thermal comfort for broilers chickens from one to 21 days of age, under Brazilian production conditions. This research was conducted with 600 COBB birds, which were distributed in five growth chambers maintained at different temperatures during the first three weeks of age. During the experimental period, temperature values were progressively reduced, consisting in five treatments: T2724/21, T30/27/24, T33/30/27, T36/33/30 and T39/36/33. It was observed that the birds maintained in...

Variation in the sugar yield in response to drying-off of sugarcane before harvest and the occurrence of low air temperatures Bragantia
Araújo,Renato; Alves Junior,José; Casaroli,Derblai; Evangelista,Adão Wagner Pêgo.
ABSTRACT The need to irrigate sugarcane in the Brazilian Savanna is due to the lack of rain from April to September. For efficient sugar accumulation, the crop needs water stress or heat stress at the maturation stage. However, when the water deficit is intense at this stage, it occurs the reduction in crop production. The objective of this study was: (i) to assess the quality of the raw material of sugarcane in different drying-off seasons before harvest; (ii) to evaluate the influence of heat stress on the culture. The experiment was conducted in Santo Antônio de Goiás (GO), Brazil, in Oxisol, with CTC4 variety in cane-plant cycle. A randomized block design in a split-plot array in time was used. The treatments of the plots were five drying-off times...

Vehicle thermal microclimate evaluation during Brazilian summer broiler transport and the occurrence of PSE (Pale, Soft, Exudative) meat BABT
Simões,Gislaine Silveira; Oba,Alexandre; Matsuo,Tiemi; Rossa,Alessandro; Shimokomaki,Massami; Ida,Elza Iouko.
The formation of a thermal microclimate within the vehicle during the transport of broilers from farm to slaughterhouse affects the birds' welfare and potentially promotes the development of PSE meat. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of routine commercial practices on the vehicle microclimate formed during transportation of broilers. Twenty-four hours postmortem Pectoralis major m. samples were classified as PSE meat by determining pH and color (L*, a* e b*). Results showed that broiler located at the rear of the truck and with longer journey presented higher amounts of PSE meat because birds were under harsh conditions of both temperature and relative humidity. The ventilation decreased gradually from the front to the rear of the...

Viral and Bacterial Epibionts in Thermally-Stressed Corals ArchiMer
Nguyen-kim, Hanh; Bouvier, Thierry; Bouvier, Corinne; Ngoc Bui, Van; Le-lan, Huong; Bettarel, Yvan.
The periodic rise in seawater temperature is one of the main environmental determinants of coral bleaching. However, the direct incidence of these episodic thermal anomalies on coral-associated microbiota and their subsequent effects on coral health are still not completely understood. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of three main microbial communities of the coral holobiont (e.g., Symbiodinium, bacteria and viruses), during an experimental thermal stress (+4 degrees C) conducted on the scleractinian Fungia repanda. The heat-treatment induced coral bleaching after 11 days and resulted in a final elevation of ca. 9, 130 and 250-fold in the abundance of mucosal viruses, bacteria, and Symbiodinium, respectively. On the contrary, the proportion of...
